Turquoise Blues: The Search for the Toltec Mine
Page 2

Back tracking to Halloran Springs Rd., we meandered our way up Turquoise Mountain.  Two hours later, we came across a small camp, where a banner with the word “Turquoise” was set up.  Thinking we’d finally arrived, I was dismayed at the idea that someone had set up a concession at the Toltec Mine.

“Close, but no cigar”, said the grizzled man who walked up to my window.  The Toltec Mine was apparently located on the other side of the mountain.  After getting directions from the man, I turned our little caravan around, and we made our way to the other side of the mountain.

A rather steep, rocky climb (necessitating the use of low gear in our 4 wheel drive transfer cases) up the mountain side brought us to the Toltec Mine.  It was early afternoon, and the temperature was a cool 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ascending Turquoise Mountain, we took a little detour and found this grave.  If there was anything carved on this wooden cross, it has long since weathered away.  Photo by Scott Schwartz
