The entrance to the Toltec Mine.  Turquoise has been mined here for over 1,000 years!

I’m pretty sure that turquoise is bluish in color; I’m not sure what kind of mineral lines the walls inside the Toltec Mine.  Perhaps the turquoise has to be dug out of the rock.  Photo by Scott Schwartz

We were able to enter the mine; however there are open vertical shaft entrances in the floor of the tunnel.  Extreme caution was necessary, as we explored the Toltec Mine.  The mine shaft appears to be empty.  However, we turned a corner at one point and came face to face with a small bat.  The bat was hanging upside down and seemed to stare at us for a minute or two.  Suddenly, it flew right toward us. Startled, we ducked as the little creature flew right past us and out of the mine.
